Gas Range Maintenance:
In addition to routine cleaning, the burners on a gas range may require adjustment from time to time. First determine if the burner flames are even. If they're not, they may be clogged. Unclogging can be accomplished with a pipe cleaner. If the flame burns even but yellow, the air supply must be adjusted. Locate the air shutter in the gas line going to each burner. Loosen the screw and adjust the shutter until the flame burns as blue as possible. Cleaning might be necessary here also. Tighten the screw when done adjusting.
Granite Countertops:
While still beyond the means of most homeowners, granite countertops are making in roads in the residential market. Granite, marble and other stone products are showing up in the high-end segment of housing in kitchens and bathrooms. A small job might be made affordable if the homeowner arranged for fabrication and installation themselves. Installation is straightforward until it's time to do the plumbing fixtures. Because most stone products are porous by nature, common plumber's putty can't be used when installing faucet and drain fittings. Oil in the putty will be drawn out by the countertop, resulting in a stain. Be sure you use a plumber's putty specifically for the stone product you are installing.
